Excluding the introduction of ordering your shopping through the internet and self-serve, the typical supermarket shopping experience has been pretty stagnant in recent history. The introduction of Amazon GO looks to revolutionize it. They are aiming to try and create a store in which nearly all aspects and elements of its operation are automated and require as little employee assistance as possible. Currently with about 18 stores open, this is an interesting concept being put to work within the United States.
A single consumer journey currently only requires the consumer themselves, the Amazon app and the immense amount of technology fitted within the store. The store essentially uses sensors and machine learning to allow a customer to walk through their entrance, collect whatever items they like and then leave, with everything they take being detected and then charged their Amazon account. This also optimizes the supply chain and inventory management.
They are not fully automated however, as there is security stationed out the front monitoring how many people are in the store at the same time. They also have people come in and restock the store when notified.
