Privacy – How can a consensus be reached?

With the rise of internet and more specifically social media, the increased availability of data about us as individuals grows more and more. The issues surrounding privacy and the right to share/own data is an uncomfortable topic, with many companies not willing to fully disclose what they use the information they collect for. Pushes for more transparency have been gaining steam as our world has entered a stage in which many elements of our lives are documented online. So how do companies and consumers reach a consensus on this issue?

Firstly, companies must place protecting their customers information and right to privacy at the forefront, even before any economical plans. What information is being taken and its uses should also be explicitly stated in the opt-in and in company policy. If you wish to use the data collated to better target demographics or learn more about your consumers, be transparent and explain that to your users. Develop a user-based method of control about what information or areas of information may be shared with the company. Privacy is the primary concern of internet users, and is only going to worsen if proper systems aren’t established.
